Whether you are a competitive athlete or are striving to be more health-Conscious, essential oils are a powerful, all-natural way to support your fitness lifestyle.
There are so many essential oils with so many benefits - for someone who may just be starting to use essential oils or are exploring the idea, it can be overwhelming. So, I decided to simplify things a bit by sharing my top three essential oils I keep in my gym bag!

Lavender essential oil is my #1 go-to oil - especially for fitness. This oil is widely used for its calming and relaxing qualities, which makes it perfect to integrate into your workout and post-workout routine.
Ideas to try out:
After a workout or an event, rub a few drops on the back of your neck and shoulders for a soothing experience. Add to a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil) or lotion to enhance the effect.
In a glass jar, combine 2 cups of epsom salt, ½ cup of baking soda, and 10 drops lavender essential oil - you’ve got yourself the perfect relaxing bath salt! This is great for soothing muscles and joints and helping reduce stress.
At night-time, add a few drops to an atomizing diffuser to promote a restful sleep.
More commonly known as Tea Tree oil, Melaleuca essential oil contains over 92 different compounds to support your health! One of the most popular and versatile oils, can be used to support a variety of athletic needs. Melaleuca can be used topically to cleanse, purify, and soothe the skin, internally to support immune function, and diffused to purify and freshen the air.
Ideas to try out:
After showering, dry off your feet thoroughly, and apply a few drops of Melaleuca essential oil diluted in a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil) to promote happy, healthy feet.
- In a glass spray bottle, combine ¾ cup distilled water, ¼ cup witch hazel, along with 4 drops of Melaleuca and 4 drops of Lavender essential oils - this is a handy little spray for cleaning yoga mats and other fitness equipment.
And, my top essential oil for athletes is…
Peppermint essential oil has a high menthol content, which makes it great for supporting healthy respiratory function and gives it an energizing boost. It’s cool and tingly to the skin, and refreshing and elevating for focus and mood.
A study published in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition that examined peppermint essential oil’s effect on running performance showed that consuming a small amount of peppermint essential oil (about 10 drops) in water daily can improve exercise performance, respiratory function, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory gas exchange. Work performance increase, as well as endurance!
Talk about a rad little oil! I use this little guy on the daily. Peppermint is a must-have for the ultimate, all-natural gym bag.
Ideas to try out:
Consume in water before working out to support healthy digestion and athletic performance (I recommend using a glass water bottle).
Place two drops in the palm of your hands, rub hands together, cup hands over nose, and breathe in deeply for an energetic boost (be careful not to get in eyes or on face).
Dilute with a carrier oil or lotion and apply to sore or fatigued muscles for cooling relief.
