I used to buy all of my cleaning supplies from the grocery store, just like most people. And, when the label said "Natural," I would usually trust it.

But not anymore.

You'd be surprised at how many store-bought cleaners Masquerade as "natural" while being filled with toxic chemicals and known carcinogens.

I say that a lot, and for good reason - if you knew exactly what was in what you were buying, perhaps would put your money elsewhere (such as, to getting one of these kits that can help you jumpstart your nontoxic makeover).

Or, you would save money by making your own.

Keep reading for my top nontoxic cleaning tips + 4 recipes I use personally around my home! They are all-natural, effective, and use simple ingredients you may already have on-hand!

DIY Is The Way To Go

By making your own natural cleaning supplies, not only can you help significantly reduce your toxic load (the accumulation of toxins and heavy metals that happens over time as we are exposed to them), but you can also save A LOT of money.

Plus, they make cleaning SO MUCH MORE FUN. And they smell a lot better too!

a few things you’ll need to get started

  • High-quality glass containers. Glass is important for a few reasons. 1) It’s more sustainable than plastic. 2) We’re going to be using some super-concentrated cleaning power provided by Mother Nature (essential oils) and glass is the best way to store them.

  • Essential oils! I only use the best of the best - you can read more up on why I choose dōTERRA here. If you’re just getting started, this kit has 10 of the most popular essential oils - even if you only have a handful of oils, there’s a lot you can do with them!

  • Labels. You can go DIY on these and make your own…OR, you can pick up these high-quality essential oil-resistant labels from FULL DISCLOSURE: I helped develop and design these, so I may be a little biased….but they’re pretty rad! And, they include recipes and tips on the back!

  • There’s a few extra household supplies you may need, like white vinegar or Castile soap. Thrive Market is my go-to for stocking up on things like this - they offer great wholesale prices, I often get free shipping and freebies, and they always have great promos and deals!

This is the cleaner I reach for when I need to clean up spills, wipe down countertops, or give my stovetop and appliances. It's well-rounded, versatile, and ALL-NATURAL!

In an 8oz spray bottle, combine:

Other essential oils I like to use are Bergamot, Black Pepper, Arborvitae, and Purify. Alternatively, you can combine 1 tbsp On Guard Cleaner Concentrate with 8oz water if you have it on-hand.

This glass spray works better than anything you could pick up at the store! And, drop for drop, is more cost-effective plus I know exactly what is in it.

Make sure to use distilled water to get that streak-free shine!

In an 8oz spray bottle, combine:

3/4 cup white vinegar

1/4 cup distilled water

5 drops citrus essential oil of your choice (suggestions: Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, or my go-to blend, Citrus Bliss)

This is a great way to harness the super concentrated power of essential oils in a powerful way! You can use the cleaner concentrate to make larger batches of an all-purpose cleanser or apply directly to tough cleaning jobs or places that need a good scrubbing.

In a 4oz dropper bottle, add:

8 tablespoon liquid Castile soap

25 drops essential oil of choice (suggestions: Purify, Lavender, Melaleuca, Lemon)

Move over toxic air fresheners! Once you make your own Fresh Air Spray, you'll never want to go back!

I keep a few of these around the places that could always use a spritz of freshness - the entryway of my apartment, the bathroom, the living room, and in my closets.

In a 4oz spray bottle, add:

15 drops essential oil of choice (suggestions: Purify, Lavender, Peppermint, Wild Orange)

Top off with water. Shake before using and spray away!

Add more essential oil, if desired - I usually do! I like my Fresh Air Spray smelling super fresh, and a few extra drops of oil help do the trick. One of my favorite combos is mixing Lavender with Purify (the floral scent softens up the sharp, clean scent of Purify) OR Douglas Fir with Cypress, Vetiver, and Bergamot - it's so woodsy! For the bedroom, Serenity makes for a great linen spray.
