The creative process can be hard.

It can be exhausting. It can be a lot of work. I mean, a lot of times it's really satisfying. But sometimes it feels a lot like banging your head against the wall over and over again, trying to make the ideas come out.

As a creative professional, I get it. I love what I do. I really do! But I am also acutely aware how much of a buzzkill creative blocks are. On occasion client work can be akin to torture, and there are even times that writing for my own blog feels like I'm milking an empty udder.

Okay, enough with the dramatic, painful metaphors.

Personally, no matter what creative endeavor I pursue, I've found that I set myself up for success by having creative rituals. There's something about paying attention to little details that facilitates focused, creative action.

One thing that's really helped me get into my groove and be my most productive self is diffusing essential oils.

Over the past two years, I've turned to emotional aromatherapy to help take control of my creative process and support a healthy, positive mindset. Diffusing essential oils is a great way to experience them aromatically.

As the late Alexander McQueen beautifully put it...

“There is no better designer than nature.”

So, why not accept a little help from Mother Nature? 😉

The following is a combination of essential oils I like to diffuse when I need to get my creative juices flowing! I especially like to diffuse it when I'm writing and recording music.

This blend of essential oils is particularly conducive to setting the scene to make some magic happen!

To an atomizing diffuser, add:

  • 3 drops Bergamot essential oil
  • 2 drops Clary Sage essential oil
  • 2 drops Frankincense essential oil
  • 1 drop Patchouli essential oil

Why these essential oils?

Bergamot essential oil

One of my favorites, Bergamot essential oil, is a spicy citrus with a bittersweet scent that is both calming and powerfully uplifting. You may recognize it as one of the key ingredients in Earl Grey tea - it's what gives Earl Grey it's distinct flavor!

Emotionally, Bergamot essential oil is the oil of self-acceptance, and diffusing it fosters a sense of confidence and self-assurance.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary Sage essential oil, the oil of clarity and vision, is definitely appropriate for this blend. The main chemical constituent of Clary Sage essential oil is a linalyl acetate (part of the esters group), making it one of the most relaxing and soothing oils, as well as an excellent one to support creativity.

Used aromatically,  Clary Sage essential oil opens creative channels, clears creative blocks, and helps you tune into your gifts and strengths.

frankincense essential oil

Historically, Frankincense essential oil has been used in religious practices and to support meditation. The oil of truth, Frankincense invites you to let go of lower vibrations and to move onward and upward!

Diffusing Frankincense essential oil helps break down the walls in your heart and mind and opens you up to new possibilities, making it great for bolstering the creative process.

Patchouli essential oil

Last in the mix is Patchouli essential oil, a bushy herb in the mint family, which has a rich, musky-sweet scent and is great for bringing you tot he present.

When used aromatically, Patchouli essential oil has a very grounding, stabilizing effect on emotions and helps you better connect with your physicality.

There's something I like to call the dōTERRA difference.

More than any other essential oil company I've come across, dōTERRA goes out of their way to provide the most purepotent, and therapeutically beneficial essential oils.

dōTERRA employs a self-imposed standard for purity called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade - all of dōTERRA's essential oils must meet this standard to be sold and used. In order to be labeled Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (or CPTG for short), a batch of essential oil must pass eight different tests read up more on the process here!

Because of this testing process, you can be confident that dōTERRA essential oils are safe, pure, and effective to use in the ways described above and why I choose to use them in my integrative health coaching practice.

Each essential bottle also includes a Quality ID # that you can use to track where your oil was sourced and view the GC/MS test results for the batch. How cool is that?!

From my experience, dōTERRA essential oils are the best out there.
